How Long Do MRCOOL Mini Splits Last?

MRCOOL mini split systems are a popular choice for cooling and heating spaces, without the need for ductwork. Their systems provide energy-efficient temperature control at an affordable price and come with an extensive limited lifetime warranty to back them up.

If you are looking to purchase a new MRCOOL mini split, or already have one, you may be asking yourself, "How many years will it last me?" It's a valid question to be asking, so let's delve into everything you'll need to know about how long MRCOOL mini split systems last and how to make them last even longer.

MRCOOL Mini Split: Lifespan on Average

On average, MRCOOL mini splits can last between 12-15 years, with consistent maintenance, regular cleaning, and proper use. It is important to consider several factors, however, that can influence the lifespan of your system:

  • Frequency of Usage: Naturally, mini splits that are used on a regular basis will wear far faster than those which are only used occasionally. A unit installed in a primary bedroom, for example, won't last as long as one installed in a guest home.
  • Outdoor Climate: Mini split systems that operate in extreme climates, like Florida summers or Pennsylvania winters, will likely break faster than units in milder climates.
  • Maintenance Frequency: Irregular maintenance can lead to operational issues in your mini split system. Using something like the MRCOOL Care Kit and having professional maintenance done annually can help prevent this and keep your mini split running at its best. Always make sure to check the owner's warranty for specific care guidelines.
  • Proper Installation: Many MRCOOL mini splits allow for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) installation. If you aren't confident in your installation skills, however, it is recommended that you find a professional to do it for you. Improper installation can lead to a voided warranty or premature failures and expensive repairs.

Maximize the Lifespan of Your MRCOOL Mini Split

MRCOOL mini splits are built to last, but there are things you can do to make them last even longer.

Choose the Right Size

When buying a MRCOOL mini split, it is imperative to select a unit that has an adequate output capacity for your space. Failing to choose the correct unit can lead to inconsistent temperature control and an overworked system.

Properly Install It

Many of the MRCOOL mini split systems are DIY, so it is important to follow the manual's exact instructions when setting up your unit. As we mentioned earlier, hiring an HVAC professional, if you are not confident about installing the unit yourself, can be a good idea that will save you money in the long run.

Keep It Clean

Keeping your unit clean is one of the best ways to prevent your MRCOOL mini split from running inefficiently and taking on excessive wear. As a rule of thumb, we recommend cleaning your filter once a month and replacing it every year or so. Activated carbon filters may need to be replaced more frequently, every 3 to 6 months, if they show a lot of wear or have a strong odor.

Call a Professional

Even though most MRCOOL mini splits are DIY, you will want to have a professional come in and service your system annually. The HVAC technician will be able to inspect, test, repair, and replace harder to reach parts like motors, fans, refrigerant lines, and communication wires. While this can mean a little extra spending, it will ultimately save you money in the long run by preventing severe unit failures and delaying unit replacement.

Protect Your Condenser

The condenser is the heart and lungs to your MRCOOL mini split. Keeping it clean and away from debris, plants, leaves, snow, and other obstructions will maximize air flow and make sure your unit is working as efficiently as possible. If you live in a tropical climate, we also recommend elevating your condenser, with a mounting system or platform, to prevent potential flooding from ruining your system.

Run it on Auto

Running your MRCOOL mini split on "Auto Mode" is a great way to maximize comfort while reducing wear on your system. This setting allows your system to automatically switch between cooling, heating, and dehumidifying, which stops the compressor from needing to constantly turn on and off.

Signs You Need a Replacement

By combining the built-in durable construction and the tips listed above, your MRCOOL mini split will last a very long time. There will, however, come a time where it will need to be replaced. To know when that time has come, look out for some key signs:

Significantly Higher Energy Bills

When a system starts to fail, it requires significantly more effort and energy to achieve the desired temperature. If you've noticed that your energy bills have significantly increased as of late, you might be dealing with a system that needs to be replaced.

Frequent Errors

Although mini splits will require some minor repairs and replacements during their lifetimes, a mini split that is frequently suffering from errors, compressor failure, or leaks might be at the end of its life.

Loud Noises and Random Powering Off

If your MRCOOL mini split is making weird noises, like rattling, banging, buzzing, or grinding, you are likely dealing with severe internal-parts damage. This can cause the unit to randomly power off and is a sign that your unit needs to be replaced immediately.

Poor Temperature Control

If your MRCOOL mini split is struggling to constantly maintain your desired temperature, after cleaning and maintaining the unit, it likely needs to be replaced with a new system.

Visible Unit Damage

Despite coming with a Gold Fin® condenser, MRCOOL mini splits will eventually degrade after constant exposure to the elements. If you notice physical damage like rust or corrosion, be sure to have a professional check your system for internal damage. This could be a sign that the system needs to be replaced.
