Frequently asked questions
Which MRCOOL mini split should I choose?
For a single-room DIY project, start with Select, EasyPro, and E Star. For several rooms, explore DIY multi-zone configurations. Include DIY Hyper Heat when winter performance is a priority. If a contractor is handling the installation, compare Olympus and Advantage. Your room loads and layout determine the final model.
What is the difference between DIY Select and EasyPro?
Both are wall-mounted, single-zone DIY series. Select emphasizes budget-conscious comfort and includes white and black indoor-unit options in our collection. EasyPro emphasizes affordable efficiency for an individual room. There is no reason to assume one wins every comparison: choose the size you need, then compare its complete-package price, energy ratings, included materials, and appearance. For several separate rooms on one outdoor unit, explore DIY multi-zone instead.
What is the difference between E Star and DIY Hyper Heat?
E Star is a single-zone path within the DIY 5th Gen lineup. DIY Hyper Heat puts greater emphasis on cold-weather heating. If the system will be your primary heat source, compare its heating output at your local winter design temperature with the room’s calculated heat loss. The lowest operating temperature alone does not tell you whether it can keep your room warm.
Can I install Olympus or Advantage myself?
These are professional-install systems. They use conventional refrigerant connections and require HVAC installation procedures, rather than the DIY Quick Connect setup. Arrange a qualified installer before purchasing.
Can I mix wall-mounted units and ceiling cassettes?
Some approved multi-zone configurations support both. Indoor units, condenser, refrigerant connections, and line sets must form a manufacturer-approved combination. Shared branding alone does not establish compatibility.
Which series is best for a garage or workshop?
For occasional cooling, Select or EasyPro may be a sensible starting point. E Star and DIY Hyper Heat are also worth considering when efficiency or winter heating matters more. Insulation, ceiling height, door openings, equipment loads, and target temperature determine capacity.
How do I choose the BTU size?
Use room dimensions, ceiling height, insulation, windows, climate, and heating needs. Square footage alone is an estimate. For primary heating and final sizing, a Manual J load calculation provides a more precise basis.
Are line sets included?
Package contents vary across single-zone kits, multi-zone bundles, and component-only listings. A complete project needs matched indoor and outdoor equipment, compatible refrigerant lines and connections, controls, drainage, mounting materials, and electrical provisions. Check the listing’s included-items section before buying; “system” does not necessarily mean every installation material is supplied.
Should I choose a single-zone or multi-zone mini split?
A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor unit for an individual area. Multi-zone systems connect several indoor units to a shared outdoor unit, letting you set room temperatures separately. Compare both layouts for separate rooms: multiple single-zone systems can offer independent operation, while multi-zone reduces the number of outdoor units. Size each room and confirm the equipment combination before choosing.
Can one multi-zone system heat one room and cool another at the same time?
These residential MRCOOL multi-zone systems share an outdoor operating mode. Indoor units can have separate temperature settings, but they do not provide simultaneous heating in one room and cooling in another. If that flexibility matters, consider separate systems.
Does DIY installation include the electrical work?
DIY Quick Connect simplifies the refrigerant connections. The system still needs the correct electrical supply, wiring, protection, and disconnect where required. Plan that work with a qualified electrician and follow the installation manual and local requirements.
Before you order
- Size each room: account for climate, insulation, ceiling height, windows, and heating needs.
- Choose the installation path: DIY Quick Connect or a contractor-installed refrigerant system.
- Choose the indoor style: wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, or a compatible concealed ducted option.
- Confirm the equipment match: indoor units, outdoor unit, and connections must work together.
- Measure the line route: follow the actual path between units, including turns and elevation changes.
- Plan power and materials: confirm the required voltage and check what the package includes before arranging electrical work.
For several rooms, start with our DIY system configurator. For help choosing a series, contact MRCOOL HVAC Supply.
