MRCOOL Mini Split: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

MRCOOL Mini Splits: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the MRCOOL Mini Split Really DIY?

MRCOOL mini splits come in both DIY (do-it-yourself) and non-DIY options. From their various collections, the DIY 4th Generation and Easy Pro Series mini splits offer DIY installation. MRCOOL mini splits from the Advantage and Olympus Series are not DIY and must be installed by a licensed HVAC professional.

Do I Need to Buy Extra Installation Equipment?

The DIY MRCOOL mini splits include all the parts a handy person will need for the installation. Since these units do not use a power cord, they will need to be connected to a disconnect box, or circuit breaker, via an electrical whip. This disconnect box then needs to be connected to the main breaker box of your home. If you aren't comfortable doing electrical work yourself, it is recommended to hire an electrician for this part of the installation.

What are the Advantages of the MRCOOL 4th Generation Series ?

Compared to the previous 3rd Generation Series, the MRCOOL mini splits of the 4th Generation Series offer various upgrades:

  • More efficient single-zone systems with the 18K, 24K, and 36K BTU mini split systems.
  • A new 18K and 48K BTU condenser.
  • A new and improved warranty.
  • Includes a stronger and longer-lasting communication wire.

What if my Line Set is Longer Than What I Need?

If you have any excess line set, MRCOOL recommends you to leave it coiled up and lying horizontally near the condenser. It is also recommended that you wrap it in protective tape included with your mini split.

Note that this will not impair the performance of your MRCOOL mini split system.

How Much Area do the Air Handlers Cover?

When choosing the right MRCOOL mini split for you, make sure to consider the area of the rooms you wish to cover. You can use this quick coverage area guide to choose an appropriately sized air handler for your space:

  • Square Feet : Up to 375 | BTU = 9K
  • Square Feet : Up to 500 | BTU = 12K
  • Square Feet : Up to 750 | BTU = 18K
  • Square Feet : Up to 1,000 | BTU = 24K
  • Square Feet : Up to 1,500 | BTU = 36K

Do I Need to Connect Air Handlers to all the Ports in my Multi-Zone Condenser?

Some of our pre-designed MRCOOL mini split systems may come with less air handlers than ports on the condenser. This is intentionally done to ensure that the combined BTU capacity of the air handlers do not exceed the output capacity of the condenser.

If you are designing your own MRCOOL mini split bundle, you will want to make sure the combined BTU capacity of the air handlers connected, at any given time, is at least 75% the BTU capacity of the condenser.

This is especially important if you plan to buy a larger multi-zone condenser and want to increase the number of air handlers connected over time.

How Long Can I Extend my Line Set?

The maximum length to which you can extend your MRCOOL line set will depend on what MRCOOL mini split you have. Here is a general guide of line set length limits for MRCOOL mini splits:

  • DIY Single-Zone Systems
    • 75 ft.
  • DIY 18K - 48K BTU Multi Zone Condensers with One Air Handler
    • 75 ft.
  • DIY Multi-Zone (Combined Line Set Length)
    • 2 Zone - 123 ft.
    • 3 Zone - 172 ft.
    • 4 Zone - 221 ft.
    • 5 Zone - 221 ft.

What is a SEER Rating?

You will often see MRCOOL mini split systems described by their SEER rating. Simply put, the SEER rating is a measure of energy efficiency and represents how much cooling a system can put out per watt-hour of electricity during an average cooling season.

When shopping for your mini split, all you need to know is that the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system is.
