What is a Mini Split and What Does it Do?
To put it simply, a mini split is an A/C system that allows the user to control the temperature of each room individually.
Also known as a ductless system, a mini split regulates temperature by using refrigerant to add and remove heat from a room. This refrigerant travels directly between the indoor unit and outdoor unit, meaning that this kind of system does not require ductwork to transfer heat.
On MRCOOL's mini splits, users can use the included remote control, or the MRCOOL Smart Controller and app, to easily switch between various modes, including "Heat" and "Cool", and influence the way heat is being transferred.
Parts of a Mini Split
MRCOOL mini splits are composed of three main pieces: the condenser (outdoor unit), the air handler (indoor unit), and the line set that links them together.
Outdoor Condenser Unit
The outdoor condenser is the powerhouse of the MRCOOL mini split system. It contains the condenser coil, compressor, and the condenser fan, which all work together to remove heat from the refrigerant.
Indoor Air Handler Unit
In a MRCOOL mini split, the indoor air handler comes as either a wall-mount unit or a ceiling cassette unit. The most important part of the air handler is the evaporator coil, where the refrigerant runs through. As the refrigerant flows through the evaporator coil, it absorbs the heat from the air in the room, reducing the air temperature and humidity level.
Line Set
The line set is the bridge between the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser of a mini split system. The MRCOOL mini split uses the MRCOOL® DIY® Quick Connect Pre-Charged Line Sets, which consist of a copper liquid line (the smaller tube) and a copper suction line (the larger tube). These tubes work to carry the refrigerant between the air handler and condenser, facilitating the heat transfer process when heating and cooling a room.
How Does a MR COOL Mini Split Work to Cool and Heat Air?
The mini cooling process follows a series of 6 steps:
- The refrigerant flows from the line set and enters the evaporator coil in the air-handler.
- Once the refrigerant is in the evaporator coil, it absorbs heat from the room. This converts the refrigerant from a liquid state and into a gaseous state.
- After the refrigerant has evaporated, it is pulled into the compressor through the line set's suction tube. In the compressor, the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant gas is increased.
- From the compressor, the hot refrigerant gas goes to the condenser coil, where it transfers the heat it absorbed to the outdoor air. This release of heat converts the refrigerant back into its liquid state.
- Once the refrigerant has returned to its liquid state, it goes through an extension valve which cools if further and lowers the pressure.
- From the expansion valve, the liquid is taken by the liquid line back up to the air handler, where the cycle begins again.
This cycle repeats itself until the room is cool.
Heating occurs in the opposite fashion, where the refrigerant takes the outdoor heat into the room and the cool air to the outside.
Advantages of a MRCOOL Mini Split
Low Energy Consumption
With their DC inverter technology and ductless design, MRCOOL mini splits are able to provide powerful heating and cooling while consuming less energy than traditional A/C systems.
Custom Temperature Control
As a result of their design, mini splits are able to provide users with custom cooling and heating in each room, completely independent of each other. This means that you can set the temperature of your room to your liking without making the rest of your household uncomfortable. This also means that you can pick and choose what rooms you heat and cool so you don't waste electricity on unoccupied spaces.
Versatile Installation
With their ductless design, various mounting options, multi-zone capability, and varying line set lengths, the MRCOOL mini split systems allow users to install their units in multiple ways to accommodate their specific layout.
Silent Operation
Thanks to their sound-suppressing design, efficient blower, and state of the art compressor technology, MRCOOL mini split units are able to quietly cool and heat spaces without compromising on power.
Air Filtration
The MRCOOL mini split systems come with a top-tier filter that helps capture and remove dust, pollutants, and particles from the air you breathe.
